Leukemia can be acute (cancer cells multiply quickly) or chronic (progress slowly). It is also classified according to the type of cell (Lymphocytes or myeloid cells) multiplying. Myeloid cells are immature blood cells that would become granulocytes or monocytes. In lymphocytic leukemia, abnormal blood cells arise form bone marrow lymphocytes. ALL occurs mostly in children, and AML occur both in children and adults. Whereas CLL mostly affect people over age of 55 and CML affects adults.
Expressed Sequence Tag is a short sub sequence of cDNA sequence, used to identify gene transcripts and to determine gene sequence. EST represents portion of expressed genes, serves as a landmark for mapping.
